Kittens roam freely in this bookstore, available for adoption by customers

Going to an animal shelter would definitely be your first choice if you ever wanted to adopt an adorable little kitten. But have you considered visiting a bookshop instead?

A bookstore outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada called Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee used a creative strategy to persuade people to save kittens. When you enter to have a cup of coffee or go through some interesting books, you’ll notice something strange. That’s unusually lovely.

Kittens! Many of them, too! Tinkering about and taking a snooze amidst the books. Possibly reading The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss out of sight. There are frequently many kittens and “typically a mom cat as well,” the bookstore’s owner Ellen Helmke told Narcity. However, the kittens in the bookshop aren’t just homeless stray cats brought in from the cold. The South Paw Conservation Nova Scotia rescue organization provides them.

You’d best move quickly if you were in Upper Tantallon and went to Otis & Clementine’s and saw a cat you simply adored. As they are adopted, “all the kittens are in and out rather rapidly,” Helmke said.

Adopting these cats isn’t as simple as scooping them up and leaving the house, though. Everything is run by South Paw Conservation. Everything, including any medical expenditures, is covered by the adoption fee. Additionally, prospective cat owners must supply references before taking their rambunctious tabby home.

A few years back, Helmke began the kitten adoption program after realizing that her store had plenty of room for cuddly cats. Over 30 cats from the bookshop have already found new homes. And we have no doubt that this figure will increase. She told that some people simply stroll in to look at books when there are kittens, while others come here particularly to view the kitties.

In any case, the feedback has been fantastic—I mean, who doesn’t adore kittens? “We have a 100% adoption rate, which is great,” Helmke said.
