Thong Bai: Thai elephant freed after 40 years

7 months trước

Elephants are among the most docile and intelligent mammals on the planet. They generally live in the wild, especially in Thailand, where they are very popular. Unfortunately, some elephants are captured and chained for entertainment. Thong Bai, a legendary Thai bull elephant, is a sad example. This majestic elephant is famous throughout the country and has been entertaining tourists for over 40 years.

Lek Chailert, founder of The Elephant Sanctuary, shares Thong Bai’s remarkable journey on Facebook, advocating for his rescue and freedom.

He has served the people for over forty years and he deserves his freedom,” Lek wrote.

After over 40 years, Thong Bai is liberated from captivity and can roam freely. As a private elephant, he appeared in various advertisements and films in Thailand, including weddings. He is currently receiving care in Surin province, where Lek previously brought Khun NuNa Silpa-archa to visit him and other elephants.

Khun NuNa was moved by Thong Bai’s presence and decided to aid the elephants in the region.

After seeing him, she looked for a way to help him and give him more respect and freedom,” Lek explains.

This encounter led to Thong Bai’s release. Khun NuNa Silpa-archa worked tirelessly to aid the elephants, succeeding in freeing Thong Bai a year later. The owners and advocates reached an agreement, granting Thong Bai an enclosure where he can live chain-free. This initiative is part of the Surin project, which aims to enhance the welfare of elephants and the livelihoods of their caretakers.

Thanks to community collaboration, Thong Bai’s new sanctuary was built, funded by the Thai Beverage Company and supported by the Surin government. This spacious enclosure provides him with comfort, safety, and freedom from chains and labor. Complete with amenities like a fountain, ample mud, shade, and room to roam, it’s a perfect haven for him.

The day everyone has been waiting for has finally arrived. More than four decades of shackles and finally liberation,” writes Lek. “Thong Bai, the Legend of Surin, is freed from his chains. We welcomed him today to his new home . He seemed unsure and nervous about his new freedom and even shy about exploring without being told what to do.

After over 40 years in chains, Thong Bai is finally liberated, symbolizing a triumph for elephant advocates and a pivotal moment in his life. Their solidarity and unwavering efforts made his freedom a reality, granting him a life befitting his majesty.
